Over
the weekend we went to see 500
Days of Summer, a film that is
described
as a romantic comedy but is actually more like an anti-fairytale.
It’s about a boy who falls head over heals for the kind of
girl who doesn't believe in love or fate. How’s that for a
twist?
It all begins when Tom catches sight of Summer, the new assistant at
work, and his heart gets whiplash. He's been waiting for love, as one
reviewer put it “like a winning lottery ticket, and now he
thinks he can claim it.”
Summer is friendly but remote as she maintains a protective force field
around her heart…which, of course, makes her all the more
desirable to young and naïve Tom.
What I loved about this film is how it demonstrates the importance of
“deep listening” and “heart
discernment.” From nearly the first moment they meet, Summer
tells Tom that she doesn’t believe in love, isn’t
looking for a relationship and isn’t interested in anything
more than a little fun and friendship.
Tom, already in a haze of infatuation, isn’t listening. Over
500 days, the two hang out, go to movies, dinners, karaoke bars and
have romps in the hay. In Tom’s mind they are a couple, in
Summer’s they are friends
with benefits.
The lesson in this film is, quite simply, to “hear”
the other. Summer wasn’t leading him on, she was forthright
about what she wanted, Tom just chose to not listen.
One of the most inventive scenes in the film is when Tom is invited to
a party at Summer’s apartment. On half of the screen we see
what Tom is thinking and expecting. On the other half of the screen is
the reality (which doesn’t match his expectations) and the
result is devastating to him."
It’s important that when your inner guidance is sending you
“red flags” that you align your expectations with
the reality of what someone is sharing with you. If they are
communicating to you that they are not interested in a relationship,
even though
they may be spending tons of time with you,
LISTEN to them.
Don’t think that they will: 1. get over it 2. you can change
their mind, 3. they are just “scared” or 4. That
you have enough love for both of you.
If you are committed to manifesting the love of your life, then
don’t invest your precious time or your heart in someone who
is enjoying your company but can’t or won’t commit
to you. You deserve to have Big Love with someone who cherishes and
